I get asked all the time,
"What should we wear to our session?"
Maybe you've already spent time rummaging though your closet wondering what would make you look your best. And maybe you still need a little direction.
Here are a few helpful tips so that you and your family's pictures will really pop!
1. Color, color, color! Here are a few helpful tips so that you and your family's pictures will really pop!
Color is so important in photos. It can really make or break a picture. Don't be a afraid of color! Try to stay away from everyone wearing the same color (especially white--it will wash out your face). Instead, choose a few colors (2-4) that compliment each other. Jewel tones, pastels, and earth tones all work well. Gray is also a popular neutral that looks great with just about any color.
2. Patterns!
Patterns photograph very well and can add interest to your photos. Some patterns that work well are stripes, plaids, florals and polka dots. Don't overdo it on the patterns, though. If you're a family a five, for example, having a couple of patterns mixed in with some solids is usually enough. Just make sure they compliment each other and there is a good balance between patterns and color. You don't want one person standing out from the rest. And as a general rule, stay away from characters, logos and lettering. They take too much attention away from your face.
3. Layering!
When choosing your outfits, consider layering. Cute jackets, scarves, vests, ties, leggings, and collared shirts are all great layering options. And don't forget about texture. Adding texture (denim, corduroy, leather, etc.) adds visual interest.

4. Accessorize!
Accessories can really add that last little bit of "oomph" your outfit needs. A pretty necklace, a chunky bracelet, a glitzy hair clip, a colorful tie, or a fun belt can all help an outfit feel put together. And make sure when choosing accessories that they reflect your personality!
5. Comfort!
Make sure your clothes fit well--not too tight or too baggy. If you're buying a new outfit for any member of your family (especially little ones) make sure you try it on before the session! If you or your child are uncomfortable in your outfit it may reflect in the photos.
6. Shoes!
Don't forget about your feet. Make sure your shoes are comfortable and compliment your clothes. And if you're wearing socks, make sure they blend well with the rest of your outfit. Sometimes it's more fun to go barefoot!
7. Don't stress!
Lastly, don't stress about your outfit selection. The main goal is to select clothes that work well together as a whole and reflect your personalities. Family photos should be fun so don't let the outfits get in the way of that!
